Antler Slices — the Hows and Whys

Since ancient times, velvet deer antlers (young pre-calcified osseous organs with tubular structure filled with blood) have always been highly valued in oriental medicine. Antlers are the only body organ of mammals which is completely renewed every year thanks to the stem cells — that is why antlers have such valuable medicinal properties.

Velvet antlers contain 18 amino acids (out of 20 essential for the human body), collagen, vitamins, macro and microelements (from iodine and selenium to zinc, phosphorus, and cobalt). They also contain glutamic acid, lipids, enzymes, growth hormones, and other nutrients. All these substances are preserved in antler slices. Antler slices enhance performance, energy, stamina, relieve stress. Velvet preparations improve digestion, accelerate ulcer and wound healing, stimulate the immune system, improve resistance to infections and blood oxygen circulation, help “tune” the hormonal system.

Red deer and reindeer antlers are prescribed for various diseases:

Preparation of slices

Antler slices are thin pieces 0.5 to 10 mm thick made of preserved antlers of reindeer or red deer. Slices are manufactured from graded dense antlers (grades 1 to 3) 5 to 70 cm long with elastic structure. Such antlers have the greatest concentration of valuable microelements, all essential minerals, 18 amino acids, steroids, and phospholipids.

The raw materials are pre-processed using one of these methods:

  • Baking and drying
  • Boiling and drying
  • Freezing and drying

Sometimes they are vacuumed or placed in alcohol-based solutions. Processing method affects the price of antler slices. The final product is sliced using manual or mechanical guillotine shear cutters. The slices are dried on metal shelves under pressure.

Application. There are several ways to use antler slices. Here’s a collection of the most popular recipes.

Recipe 1. Place 5 g of slices, 1 red date, 1 slice of raw ginger, some sake in a cup with a lid, add water until the cup is half-full, close the lid tightly, and place the cup in a pot with water. Bring the water to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 2 to 3 hours. Take it every other day gradually increasing the dose to 10 g. Warning! If you have high blood pressure or a heart disease, consult with your doctor before taking this preparation. If you experience dry mouth, red eyes, or rapid heartbeat following the intake, you should cancel this preparation.

Recipe 2. Place 25-30 g of slices, chicken (duck, goose, pigeon and/or lean pork), dates, and other ingredients (as desired) in a pot and roast for 3-5 hours.

Recipe 3. Put 20 g of slices in 500 g of 50% or stronger vodka, leave for two weeks. Take 10-25 g daily.

Recipe 4. Put 10 g of slices, 10 g of ginseng, 15 g of lycium (box-thorn), 10 g of magnolia-vine in 500 g of 50% or stronger vodka, infuse, and drink.

Recipe 5. The easiest way to take slices is to brew them in herbal tea and chew them. Use 0.5-1 g of slices for every infusion. Take every other day.
